Creating an Audience

One of the most powerful features of Sendlio is the ability to create real-time living audiences. When you create an audience, its different than a traditional list. Audiences connect directly to your data using a Data Source and compiled at send time, meaning your data is always up to date.

To create a new audience:

  1. Go to Audiences in Sendlio from the main navigation
  2. Click the "Add an Audience" button at the top of the screen
  3. Enter a name for your audience
  4. Choose the data source where the audience data is stored

Next, you have two options on how to build your audience. You can either use the visual query builder or you can write a raw SQL query yourself.

Visual Query Builder

The visual query builder lets you create audiences without coding. The SQL used for the query is generated behind the scenes by Sendlio. This is the ideal method if your audience segmentation is fairly basic or if you don't have experience with writing SQL queries.

To create an audience with the query builder:

  1. Select the database table you'd like to use (your list will be different and based on your database's structure)

When setting up your clauses, you can select a column fromm the database table, an operator, and a value. In the example above, we are pulling all users created in the past 7 days. Since we are referencing a time, we check off the "Time" checkbox to tell Sendlio to convert that value into a timestamp.

Examples of Valid Time Values

  • now
  • 10 September 2000
  • +1 day
  • +1 week
  • +1 week 2 days 4 hours 2 seconds
  • next Thursday
  • last Monday
  • first day of next month

If you are not using a time value, you can just enter a value in the box and it will be interpreted as a string.

  1. You can choose to sort or limit your results using the "Sort By" and "Limit" dropdowns.

Preview Your Results

When you create an audience query in Sendlio, you can preview the number of results returned and a sample data set for that audience on the left of the screen. Additionally, the audience data is scanned to see if the "email" or "phone" fields are present. This will let you know what type of campaigns this data will be suitable for.

Updating Audiences

Once you're satisfied with your audience, that's all you need to do. The audience will update as customer data changes so you shouldn't need to change anything going forward unless you wanted to add or remove clauses to expand or reduce the audience size.
